Suicide Prevention in Putnam and Beyond
Suicide prevention month is commemorated every September, but everyone knows that mental health challenges and suicides happen year-round. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), 94 percent of Americans believe suicide is preventable and they offer countless free, online opportunities for individuals who want to learn how they may be able to help.
Current offerings from the Hudson Valley chapter of AFSP include “Talk Saves Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention for Firearms Owners,” a one-hour community-based presentation that covers the general scope of suicide, the research on prevention and what people can do to fight suicide. Participants will learn common risk factors and warning signs associated with suicide, and how to keep themselves and others safe. Select and click on a bullet below to register.
Additional viewings of this program are also scheduled for October 10, November 14, and December 12. With most of the AFSP presentations being virtual, you can join one from another region around the country as well, including an “Introduction to Supporting Those At Risk” that helps viewers better understand how to help a friend or a loved one who is struggling. An empathetic response to someone thinking about suicide can make all the difference to that person.
And don’t forget to mark your calendars for the AFSP “Out of Darkness” Community Walk in Putnam County on September 15. For more information, visit the AFSP website at www.afsp.org/walk. For the complete calendar, click: AFS Programs Calendar.
