SCHOOL CROSSING GUARD

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS This is a responsible part‑time position calling for the exercise of considerable vigilance in directing traffic for the protection of children going to and from school. Work is performed independently with only occasional direction from a superior. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:  (Illustrative only)

  • Assists children crossing street;
  • Instructs children on the proper places for crossing street and precautions that are to be observed;
  • Directs traffic at school crossing;
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

Work activities that do not appear above are not excluded as appropriate work assignments, as long as they can be reasonably understood to be within the logical limits of the job.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good powers of observation; ability to deal with the public using firmness and tact; ability to get along well with children; maturity; familiarity with first‑aid methods; good powers of observation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Either

  1. Graduation from a high school or possession of a comparable diploma; or
  2. Four (4) years general work experience.

Mission Statement
