LIFEGUARD

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  Work consists primarily of routine beach area and/or swimming area patrol tasks performed under direct supervision. There is, however, considerable responsibility for the exercise of sound judgment in emergencies, since an error in judgment might result in the loss of life. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

  • Stands watch or patrols bathing beach area keeping bathers within bounds and going to their aid when they are in difficulty;
  • Applies resuscitation techniques and otherwise renders first aid;
  • Keeps the beach free of glass, animal droppings and other debris;
  • Performs other routine duties such as park maintenance and clerical duties;
  • Maintains order on and around the beach area;
  • Enforces compliance with beach rules;
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of first aid, life saving and rescue work as applied to accidents in the water; ability to swim well; ability to deal with the public and to secure cooperation without unnecessary antagonism; good observation; mental alertness; good moral character.

Work activities that do not appear above are not excluded as appropriate work assignments, as long as they can be reasonably understood to be within the logical limits of the job.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS*:        

Possession of a current valid advanced lifesaving certificate; basic life support cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and Standard First Aid certificates from the American Red Cross or equivalent certifying agency on the basis of standards approved by the New York State Department of Health.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to administer, in a fair and equitable manner, the provisions of New York State Civil Service Law and Putnam County Civil Service Rules with respect to the offices and employments in the classified service of Putnam County and the civil divisions therein, which include the towns, villages, school districts, libraries and special districts.
