GAS INSPECTOR
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves inspection of gas installations. Responsibilities include site inspections of any work involving liquid propane (LP) and natural gas installations, ensuring that all plumbing, and/or mechanical installations are being or have been performed appropriately. The incumbent has enforcement powers to the extent of issuing stop orders and appearance tickets to violators. The position entails a high degree of responsibility since errors in judgment might endanger lives and property. Work is performed under general supervision. Supervision of others is not a responsibility of this position. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
- Performs on-site inspections of all above ground and underground liquid propane (LP) tanks
- and lines;
- Performs inspections of all gas appliances installations;
- Reviews blueprints and plans;
- Inspects all high- and low-pressure gas lines in residential and commercial buildings;
- Maintains logs and reports of inspection results;
- Performs follow up inspections as needed to determine that violations have been corrected;
- Supervises the testing of all inside and outside liquid propane;
- Performs a variety of related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE, KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of the provisions of the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code, as well as all other laws, regulations and codes applicable to fire inspection of buildings and properties; Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with other public officials, with building contractors and with the general public; Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications; Ability to enforce codes and regulations firmly, tactfully, and impartially; Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; Tact; Courtesy.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, mechanical or construction technology, or a related field, and six (6) years of experience in the plumbing industry with possession of a plumbing license issued by a governmental agency; or
- Associates degree in engineering, mechanical or construction technology, or a related field, and eight (8) years of experience in the plumbing industry with possession of a plumbing license issued by a governmental agency; or
- Graduation from high school or possession of a comparable diploma and ten (10) years of experience in the plumbing industry with possession of a plumbing license issued by a governmental agency; or
- An equivalent combination of a), b), and c) above
PLEASE NOTE: Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- All code enforcement personnel who are charged with enforcement of the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code shall be required to complete prescribed code enforcement training courses as set forth in NYCRR Title 19 Part 1208 §3.2 Certification of Building Safety Inspectors and Code Enforcement Officials. The certified basic training program, including all required subject areas, plus gas related courses, as set forth in §1208 3.2, must be completed within one year of initial appointment.
- All code enforcement personnel shall annually receive a minimum of 24 hours of in-service training as set forth in NYCRR Title 19 Part 1208 §3.3 in each calendar year following the year in which certified basic training was successfully completed.
- Access to transportation is required to perform field work responsibilities in a timely and efficient manner.
