CLEANER

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  This is manual work of a routine nature requiring efficient performance of simple repetitive cleaning and minor maintenance tasks.  Work is performed under direct supervision. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:  (Illustrative only)

  • Cleans interior section of sections of buildings;
  • Uses building cleaning supplies, materials and equipment;
  • Dusts chairs, tables and other furniture;
  • Washes windows, walls, woodwork, toilets, sinks and other plumbing fixtures;
  • Sweeps, mops, waxes floors;
  • Sets up and takes down chairs for assemblies and special meetings;
  • Gathers and disposes of refuse;
  • Replaces paper towels and toilet tissue;
  • Trims shrubs, sweeps sidewalks and shovels snow;
  • Performs minor repairs such as replacing light bulbs and replacing ceiling tiles;
  • May secure buildings at night;
  • May vacuum and clean vehicles in the motor pool.
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

When Assigned to School Districts, duties also include:

  • Cleans interior section or sections of school buildings including halls, classrooms, faculty rooms, offices, bathrooms, stairwells, locker rooms, cafeteria and gymnasium;
  • Washes and cleans school buses;
  • May secure school buildings at night;
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

Work activities that do not appear above are not excluded as appropriate work assignments, as long as they can be reasonably understood to be within the logical limits of the job.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:   Working knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and equipment; ability to acquire a knowledge of building cleaning principles and practices, materials and equipment; ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions; ability to get along well with others; thoroughness; tact and courtesy.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  None are required, but some experience in building cleaning is preferable.
